Li Shizhen,a famous medical scientist of the Ming Dynasty, was born in Qichun选力油in today's Hubei Province in central China. At the age of 14,Li worked in his father's medicineshop. Every day, he sorted herbs ( ). One day, he read an old medical book. It said,"Duanchangcao(a kind of plant) is not poisonous( )." But just days before,a villager gotvery sick after eating it. Li Shizhen felt worried. He thought, "I need to write a right and useful herbal book to help people."
Back then, old medical books had many mistakes. Some said poisonous plants were goodfor health. Some mixed up two different herbs. When Li Shizhen saw villagers get ill because of wrong medicine, he felt sad and wanted to change this.
At 19,Li Shizhen decided to look for herbs by himself. He took a bamboo basket and anotebook. He climbed high mountains (like Wudang Mountain) and walked along rivers (likethe Yangtze River). Sometimes, snakes and bees hurt him. He was much afraid, but he neverstopped. For each herb, he wrote down its look, smell and what it is used for. He also askedlocal herbalists and hunters to check his notes.
Once, he heard about a flower called "mandala". People said it could make people sick andfall. To know its real effect, he tasted a little of it. Soon,he felt dizzy and fell down. Luckily, hisfriends saved him. When he woke up,he wrote: "Mandala is dangerous. Use it very carefully."
After about 30 years, Li Shizhen finished his book Compendium of Materia Medica (《本H纲》). It told about 1,892 herbs and 11, 096 ways to use them. It became a very famous medical book. In his later years. Li Shizhen said proudly, "Even a small right thing can keep one more person safe.
