In 2017, the new 480-kilometre Mombasa-Nairobi railway was opened. Before then, theonly transport links between Mombasa, Kenya'smain port, and Nairobi, Kenya's capital, wererough roads and an old railway line built in1901. The old trains were very slow. It took 10hours to get to Nairobi from Mombasa by train.

However, the new railway, built with China's help, has already cut thetravel time between Mombasa and Nairobi to about four hours forpassengers. Now, more than two million people use it every year.

Local Kenyans have benefited a lot from the new railway. A governmentworker said, "I'm very happy with the new railway built by our Chinesefriends. Many changes have taken place in the town over the last fewyears, and the people who live here have become rich." A businessmansaid, "My experience of using the train since 2017 has been good. It is veryconvenient and doesn't cost much money. I am able to get to places ontime and make business deals with ease." The railway has also made thetransport of food easier. "Food used totake hundreds of lorries to carry betweenthe two cities, but now it takes onlytwo or three trains," said a supermarketmanager. As a result, people now havemore fresh food to eat.

Although China and Kenya are far awayfrom each other, the railway shows howdifferent countries can work together tobuild a better world.
